Medical Nutrition Therapy
I provide personalized care for your gastroenterology (GI) nutrition concerns. Medical nutrition therapy starts with your unique story: your symptoms, your clinical picture; what helps, what hurts; your goals and preferences. Based on these, we’ll work together to develop a nutrition care plan. You’ll be provided with the strategies and the tools you need to move forward.
Medical nutrition therapy has two aims: treating the medical condition and managing symptoms, all while enjoying a varied, nutritious diet. At times, these aims are accomplished with the help of special medical diets. While I am known as an expert in FODMAP diets, I am not a one-trick pony! You are unique, and I’ll help you develop a plan that is right for you, whether it is an elimination diet protocol or a short list of targeted changes I think will help you the most.
My Philosophy, and Who I can help
I have a food-first approach to GI nutrition care. My advice revolves around what and how you eat, with sparing use of dietary supplements. At this time I don’t offer food sensitivity or lab testing services but I will take test results into consideration if you share them with me.
I enjoy working with patients at every phase of the GI nutrition journey. I can help you figure out where to begin, or help you take the next steps if you are stuck along the way. I excel at helping people eat less restrictive, nutrient-rich diets, and I have helped many patients achieve healthy body weights after periods of unintentional weight loss. If you have other medical conditions in addition to your GI concerns I will help you set priorities and integrate these into your GI nutrition plan.
I will not be a good fit for people who primarily want to lose weight, those with active eating disorders, or anyone whose main concern is not related to the gastrointestinal tract!
Working With Your Other Providers
I can help you work more effectively with your primary care physician, gastroenterologist and other members of your local healthcare team. I recommend that you have your GI symptoms evaluated by a physician, however a formal referral from your doctor is not required unless you need it to file an insurance claim on your own. Reports from me to your other providers are available upon request.
One caveat: If you are already getting detailed nutrition advice or following a nutrition protocol from another provider, I recommends that you complete that work before booking a visit. It is usually a mistake to try to follow too many diets at once! On the other hand, if you are looking for a fresh opinion or different approach, and you are willing to set aside some aspects of your past regimen, I’m happy to help you think things through and set new priorities.
Things To know before scheduling
Your Location
I comply with state regulations related to provision of nutrition services. Please contact us to inquire whether I can provide services in the state where you are located.
Insurance
Insurance reimbursement for services may be available in some cases. When I am out-of-network with your insurance, fees for your visits are payable in full at the time of service. HSA and FSA cards can be used to pay for nutrition services.
Technical Requirements for Telehealth
You will receive services via video-chat (Zoom). I will communicate with you through a secure, online, patient portal (Healthie), which you will be invited to join when you schedule your first session. You will need to create a username and password. Your new patient forms will be filled out on the Healthie portal. You will access handouts and other written after-visit materials on the Healthie portal. If you aren’t willing to or able to use these technology tools, this practice will not be a good fit for you.
